The Investment Policy Committee
As a DCM client, when you talk with your Financial Advisor, you’re talking to a decision maker, someone who has direct involvement in setting the firm’s investment strategy, and who personally made the decision on each and every stock that is in your portfolio.
The DCM Investment Policy Committee consists of: Greg Donaldson, Founder & Chief Investment Officer – Mike Hull, President and Portfolio Manager – Rick Roop, Vice President & Portfolio Manager – Randy Alsman, Vice President & Portfolio Manager. (Their bios can be found on the ”Our Staff” page under the “Our Firm” drop down menu.)
The Committee is responsible for maintaining the various model stock portfolios for our three Rising Dividend investment styles: Cornerstone, Capital Builder, and Income Builder. (See the “Rising Dividend Portfolio” page under the “Our Investment Approach” drop down menu.) It is the Committee’s responsibility to ensure all portfolio models faithfully implement DCM’s Rising Dividend investment strategy, and more importantly, that they are well-positioned to help achieve our clients’ investment objectives of security, income, and growth.
The Committee meets every Monday morning to review the business, economic, and political news and events of the prior week and discuss their various implications for investment strategy. The Monday meetings review the most recent opinions and predictions of various highly respected economists, business leaders, and others that we have found to offer reasoned and well-researched insights into global economies, markets, industries, and businesses.
In addition, each Investment Policy Committee member takes responsibility for being the company’s expert in several sectors of the economy and all Rising Dividend-type companies in those sectors. Using their significant leadership experience in one or more different industries, each Committee member brings considerable insight and critical experience to their “sector expert” responsibilities.
Throughout the week, in addition to their various client service duties, each Committee member devotes significant time to both broad and in-depth research into their assigned sectors and companies. They then must come to each Monday meeting prepared to discuss whether or not they believe changes should be made to specific model portfolio companies. They provide detailed rationale and defend their recommendations for or against particular companies as the other Committee members challenge their thinking, conclusions, and recommendations.
In addition to the wealth of experience represented on the Committee, DCM also utilizes many sophisticated investment data and research resources. These resources provide world class investment research support typical of many, much larger investment houses. Those resources include Bloomberg, Standard & Poor’s, Value Line, Bank Credit Analyst, Goldman Sachs, Briefing.com, Morningstar, Smith Barney, and Dr. Ed Yardeni.
We believe it is rare to find independent Registered Investment Advisors that have an Investment Policy Committee like ours, made up of executives with the total years of senior leadership experience in major, NYSE-listed businesses. Many advisors rely upon a prescribed mix of various types of mutual funds diversified across large, small, growth, value, domestic, and international businesses in predictable patterns. Decisions on specifically which individual companies your money is invested in is mostly left to various mutual fund managers.
At DCM, where our clients’ money is invested is considered too important to leave to faceless middle managers who don’t know the first thing about them, their situations, or their investment objectives. Instead, every week we personally do the research behind each Rising Dividend company our clients own, then debate and decide whether each company should be bought, held, or sold. We wouldn’t have it any other way.
You can read a summary of each week’s Committee meeting on the Ínvestment Committee Discussion” page under the “Our Investment Approach” drop down menu.
